Global movement towards Vision Zero

Direct Vision is gaining global traction as a cornerstone of the Vision Zero initiative. Pioneered by TfL London, the EU’s UNECE Standard mandates enhanced visibility for new trucks by 2026, with all trucks required to comply by 2029. This standard, designed to significantly reduce road fatalities by minimizing blind spots, will be adopted by 29 countries. The U.S. is following suit, with Massachusetts leading the charge on Direct Vision studies, and major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago poised to implement similar measures.

What is Direct Vision?

As the name suggests, the Direct Vision Standard focuses on ensuring that truck drivers have a clear view of their surroundings. Imagine sitting in a truck cab—you need to be able to see pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles clearly, especially in those challenging blind spots on both the driver and passenger sides. If a truck’s design restricts this direct line of sight, additional technology such as cameras or sensors must be installed to enhance the driver’s indirect vision and improve overall safety.

In-cab audible alerts and dynamic monitor

In-cab audible alerts and dynamic monitor

Audible alerts automatically warn the driver when any manoeuvre poses a risk to a vulnerable road user, or any other vehicle or hazard on the road. Dynamic monitors ensure that drivers always have perfect visibility

Advanced AI engine for detection of
cyclists and pedestrians

A Direct Vision system must be capable of alerting drivers when vulnerable road users are in blind spots, but these alerts must not be triggered by street furniture or cars. CameraMatics includes a sophisticated AI engine that is proven to spot vulnerable road users – and only warn drivers when it really matters.
