Direct Vision Standard is coming!

From 26 October 2020, all HGVs over 12 tonnes (GVW) entering or operating in Greater London will need to hold a valid HGV Safety Permit as part of the Direct Vision Standard (DVS).

Created to improve the safety of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, the HGV Safety Permit scheme will cover Greater London and be in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) has been developed in order to address the high number of collisions in London involving HGVs and people walking and cycling.

The DVS objectively measures a driver’s direct view through the windows of an HGV cab. This is communicated as a star rating from zero (poor) to five (excellent), which indicates the level of risk to people walking and cycling near the vehicle.

Every vehicle has a ‘star rating’ and to receive a permit HGVs must have at least one star – this will increase to three stars in 2024. One and two star-rated vehicles will be granted permits until 2024. Three, four and five star-rated vehicles will be granted a 10-year permit. You can find out your vehicle’s rating here

Vehicles which are currently rated as zero stars can become compliant by installing an approved ‘Safe System’ – on doing so they’ll be granted a permit until 2024.

The Safe System is a series of retrofitted vehicle safety measures which reduce the risks that HGVs present to people walking and cycling. To ensure consistency, the Safe System is aligned to other scheme requirements and existing regulations where possible.

How Can CameraMatics Help?

We can provide everything needed to enable zero starred vehicles to receive a permit:

  • A blind spot camera for the near side of the vehicle –  this connects to a monitor in the cab so the driver always has visibility of the blind spot.
  • Side scan sensors for around the vehicle – these alert the driver to the presence of a vulnerable road user on the near side of the vehicle.
  • A Left Turn Alert Audible Device to alert road users when the vehicle is turning left
  • In-Cab Monitor so the driver has an improved view of the outside of the vehicle
  • Prominent Safety Stickers to alert pedestrians and cyclists
  • Class V and VI Mirrors to improve the driver’s view, particularly of blind-spots
  • Side Under-run Protection  on both sides which prevents pedestrians and cyclists from being dragged under the truck
